The latest technical standards and guidance to calculate the required filter efficiency to clean ventilation air

City air pollution now encourages us to consider our buildings as havens. We need protection in the form of clean healthy ventilation air so that we can live and work safely and effectively. This has never been more important than in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest technical standards and guidance provide us with a clear method to calculate the required filter efficiency to clean ventilation air. The new ISO air filter test standards are accurate and close to real life in assessing filter performance.

Air monitoring for PM2.5 particles is possible for relatively low cost to assess the scale of the problem and have a controlled effective solution, but for protecting against COVID-19 we need to go to smaller particle sizes of PM0.3 and less. An assessment of the potential benefit to be gained in that context by using ISO16890 and EN1822/ISO29463 tested air filters to better protect people in buildings will be discussed.
