24th March 2020 - Technical webinar on 'ASHRAE Position Document on Airborne Infectious Diseases/ASHRAE COVID-19 Preparedness Resources' by Prof Ljubomir Jankovic, University of Hertfordshire

Prof Ljubomir Jankovic, Professor of Advanced Building Design at the University of Hertfordshire and 2019-2020 Chapter President of the ASHRAE UK London and South East Chapter, overviewed ASHRAE Position Document on Airborne Infectious Diseases in relation to the operation of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, expanding with his professional interpretation on relevant HVAC issues. Starting from the illustration of the aerobiology of droplets and small airborne particles produced by an infected individual, he introduced the Wells-Riley standard model of airborne infection and discussed the parameters that increase and reduce the degree of exposure to infection and a probability of a single infection. This led to explanations of practical implications for building owners, operators and engineers. Ventilation and air cleaning strategies were given a special focus, with details on dilution ventilation, filtration, and air flow regimes. He also discussed room pressure differentials for airborne infection isolation rooms and rooms with immune-compromised individuals. Concluding the talk, he highlighted the implications on emergency planning, research and standards.

12th November 2019 - Chapter meeting at University College London

After a very engaging lecture by Dr Peter Simmonds on using the Predicted Mean Vote/Percentage Persons Dissatisfied (PMV/PPD) to produce optimal designs for a number of different applications, a meeting was held to establish the Chapter Student Branch. The students showed great enthusiasm for becoming members of ASHRAE, conscious of the professional development opportunities, networking opportunities, access to new technology, event attendance discounts, job prospects, and social interaction with likeminded professionals and more experienced colleagues. They showed a great interest for a student design competition that the Chapter will set in due course. The meeting ended with a number of positive expectations over the next few months.
